Remembered Heartbreak

Heartbreak has no words, just the silent gasps
Of breath filled efforts, pain that will not lapse
The taking of my hand, leading me to places
Never seen nor ever to see in another’s face
Startled waking, your callous disregard
Coolness of words used so not to afford
Value in feelings assumed to have shared
Mingling at passion’s door, should not have dared
One must choose remnants left there on the ground
Claw not at what could have beens
Pick up memories, twist away, take leave
Journey to the next and never be bound
In singleminded aloneness now free

Spring

The road that takes me from the highway to my home
It’s a roller coaster road where you see the top
Of the next hill from the one you’re currently on
Right before you drop down you see the apple tree farm
The sign is blue that alerts you it’s more than
A house with more than just a family living there
Most days the journey is filled with thoughts and problems
Lists and schedules passing through my brain
The nagging reminders of the necessary that are
Hard to escape when heading away from work to home
Today, the first fully lovely day of this spring with
The countryside aglow in green, in newness and
Possibilities that make one so happy to be of this earth
In the valley of the road there is a gaggle of gangly
Legged laughing girls their smiles flashing silver
The sun reflecting their giggles, they pull their hands down
Signaling for honks from compacts and SUVs
All of us with horns on steering wheels, effort
Not required, no pulling necessary, just a few light taps
On my wheel and those girls, the five of them
Successful making memories together in this
Common desire to feel good, the ease of my gift
Little honks from my little red car, and all of us; we’re smiling

A Holiday Walk

I follow the dried up creek bed
While heading to my usual place of pause
It is worn, almost forgotten,
Except for the teetering old four by four
Precariously hoisted across it I imagine
By a threesome of adventurous boys
This tired limestone slab stairway
Wrought from years of diligent sculpting
Once having directed a grand flow of water
A natural engineering necessity
Now only host to the here and there
Muddied pools of stagnating lost capability

Accompanying its rocky depths around a bend
Soon, the bridge a favorite resting spot
To lean and peer at the life promising fork
Feeding the once mighty ancestor its
Sparkling presence rescuing lost glory
From a sluggish demise, merging
Joyfully in a chuckling waterfall
Trees straining in reflection leaves applauding
The propinquous scene offering hopeful belief
Life does not end it simply holds on waiting
Until a fortuitous offer around the next corner
Gives resurrection to the journey
