Forgiveness

In thinking of New Year’s resolutions and how each year is a chance that hope provides to be better and to do better, my first thought was forgiveness. If I decide to be resolute in a certain effort for the new year, then wouldn’t it benefit the effort if first one forgave all the past lapses in efforts prior to moving forward.

Initially, in my head, I thought of the awe of one forgiving another and how difficult it can be. The family who loses a child due to any number of thoughtless or unintended reasons would seem to be the most awe inspiring. But what about the smaller things that hinder our relationships with self and with others? That is what I personally plan to work on this year. Happy New Year!

Wounds not intended
Hurts causing shame
Large indiscretions
Mistakes to be tamed

Request or acceptance
Eraser of debts
Cures all resentment
Peace you will get

Promises broken
Injuries laid bare
Hurt paths forgotten
Injustices made fair

Hearts joined together
Three simple words
Say them or give them
Love’s great reward

Mommy Regrets

That blue dress, it was tight through the hips
Thank yous not written after receiving a gift
The extra cookie when I was already stuffed
Yelling too often when I’d just had enough
Little girl dreams I didn’t make come true
Saying good night without an I love you
Purchasing cards instead of creating my own
Feeling too busy to chat on the phone
Lunch dates promised but not ever made
Not stopping the bully, I was just too afraid
Packing my bags, always something I miss
Hurried goodbyes and forgetting the kiss
Not reaching out and holding you tight
Reminding you always it will soon be alright

Love Demonstrated

No one loves you
If your mother never did
She may have felt love
for you
But if she didn’t show it
How could you have known

Lacking pride and pose
In its demonstration
from birth onward
A heart struggles to
Support a soul
Lost and wandering

No one loves you
If your mother never did
They may feel love
For you
But if they don’t show it
You won’t know

Missing an anchor
On which to settle
The words I love you
Tickle a heart’s belief
Then slowly float away
Hoping for recapture

Litany

Eat your vegetables, you won’t grow big and strong
(Mary Mother of God keep him healthy)
Wear a coat and a hat, you’ll get pneumonia
(Mary Mother of God keep him healthy)
Brush those teeth, you’ll thank me someday
(Mary Mother of God keep him healthy)
Wash your hands, you don’t know how many people touched that
(Mary Mother of God keep him healthy)
Chew your food, you’re gonna choke
(Mary Mother of God keep him healthy)

Hold onto the railing, you’ll fall down the stairs
(Mary Mother of God keep him safe)
Don’t run in the house, you’ll knock your teeth out
(Mary Mother of God keep him safe)
Wear a helmet, you’ll crack your head open
(Mary Mother of God keep him safe)
Look both ways and don’t play in the street, you’ll get hit by a car
(Mary Mother of God keep him safe)
Wear your seatbelt, you’ll fly through the windshield
(Mary Mother of God keep him safe)

Tell the bully to stop, you’ll never feel good about yourself
(Mary Mother of God protect him)
Don’t play that video game, you’ll become violent
(Mary Mother of God protect him)
Say no if a friend offers you drugs, you’ll become a drug addict
(Mary Mother of God protect him)
Don’t talk to strangers, you’ll get taken from me and who knows what
(Mary Mother of God protect him)
If a gunman comes into your classroom?
Mary Mother of God where are you?

Sustenance

Back and forth
the two of us
Push, pull
manipulate
Emotional dough
kneaded
A rise then
a punch down
Miraculous
rise again
This shiny
sticky mass
Of unseen efforts
that when pulled
From the heat
reveals a warm
Tenderness encased
in a golden shell
